What is insulin test?
Insulin blood test also referred to as fasting insulin test, is a test used to measure the amount of insulin in the body. It is also used to monitor the treatment of abnormal insulin levels and also to monitor insulin resistance.

The normal range of fasting insulin varies somewhat between labs, but around 2 to 20 mIU/mL is considered normal by most.

Can you drink water before fasting insulin test?
For a fasting blood sugar test, do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 8 hours before the blood sample is taken.
What if fasting insulin is low?
If there’s not enough insulin, glucose can’t get into your cells. It stays in the bloodstream instead. Hypoglycemia, blood glucose levels that are too low. If your body sends too much insulin into the blood, too much glucose will go into your cells.
Why fasting insulin is high?
Hyperinsulinemia is most often caused by insulin resistance — a condition in which your body doesn’t respond well to the effects of insulin. Your pancreas tries to compensate by making more insulin. Insulin resistance may eventually lead to the development of type 2 diabetes.
What are symptoms of high insulin levels?
The following symptoms may indicate that you have high insulin levels in your blood:
- Frequent and intensive hunger.
- Excess cravings for sugar.
- Weight gain, especially around the waist, forming an apple shape.
- Fatigue.
- Lack of motivation or focus.
- Anxiety and panic.
How is an insulin test done?
At the test, you first drink a high glucose beverage. Your blood is drawn initially, then every half hour for two hours to check how your plasma glucose and insulin levels change in response to the high glucose drink. Our lab technicians use your test results to calculate an insulin resistance score.
