Description

What does it mean when your LDH level is high?
High levels of LDH indicate some form of tissue damage. High levels of more than one isoenzyme may indicate more than one cause of tissue damage. For example, a patient with pneumonia could also have a heart attack. Extremely high levels of LDH could indicate severe disease or multiple organ failure.
What is LDH serum test?
The lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) test looks for signs of damage to the body’s tissues. LDH is an enzyme found in almost every cell of your body, including your blood, muscles, brain, kidneys, and pancreas. The enzyme turns sugar into energy. The LDH test measures the amount of LDH in your blood or other body fluid.
Should I be worried if my LDH is high?
If your total LDH is higher than normal, it could mean that you have organ or tissue damage. But total LDH doesn’t tell which tissue or organ may be damaged. If all of your LDH isoenzymes are higher than normal, you could have damage to several organs, including your heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver.
What is LDH normal range?
Normal LDH levels range from 140 units per liter (U/L) to 280 U/L or 2.34 mkat/L to 4.68 mkat/L. Many diseases can cause LDH levels to go up. Other tests are usually needed to confirm a diagnosis. For many healthy people, a slightly high LDH isn’t serious.
Does high LDH mean Covid 19?
Elevated LDH values were found to be associated with an increased odds of severe COVID-19 outcome in all but 2 individual studies [8,9]. Pooled analysis showed about ~6.5-fold increase in odds of developing severe COVID-19 disease (OR: 6.53 [95% CI: 3.47–12.28], I2 = 31%, Cochran’s Q, p = 0.19).
Why LDH test is done?
The LDH test is generally used to screen for tissue damage. This damage may be acute (as in the case of a traumatic injury) or chronic (due to a long-term condition such as liver disease or certain types of anemia). It also may be used to monitor progressive conditions, such as muscular dystrophy and HIV.
What causes low LDH?
Mutations in the LDHA gene cause lactate dehydrogenase-A deficiency, and mutations in the LDHB gene cause lactate dehydrogenase-B deficiency. These genes provide instructions for making the lactate dehydrogenase-A and lactate dehydrogenase-B pieces (subunits) of the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme.
Is fasting required for LDH test?
You don’t need any special preparations for an LDH blood test.
How do you treat low LDH?
A low level of LDH in the blood may be due to an excessive intake of vitamin C. For that reason, you may reduce the vitamin C intake if this is the cause. There are rich in vitamin C and you should reduce the intake of oranges, tangerines, peppers, broccoli, strawberries, melon or kiwis.
